Global Hope 365 has made a substantial community impact in eight months. Global Hope 365 held its inaugural event on January 8, 2019. Throughout the spring and summer, we worked tirelessly to raise awareness among the general public by conducting 10-15 speaking engagements a month and meeting with elected officials and community leaders. The community engagement has been rewarding and successful. To deepen the conversation and increase advocacy efforts, Global Hope 365 has partnered with the UCI Initiative to End Family Violence at UCI School of Law to host a Human Trafficking and Child Marriage Forum on Saturday, September 14, 2019.
“After many months digging deep into the complexities of Human Trafficking and Child Marriage in our community, I knew the solution had to involve a collaboration of experts and professionals including lawmakers, law enforcement, the medical community, victim services agencies, and of course the interdisciplinary task forces already in place in Orange County and Riverside County,” said Rima Nashashibi, Global Hope 365’s Founder and President.
The UCI faculty has a wealth of expertise on the topic of Human Trafficking.
Professor Jane Stoever has extensive experience teaching domestic violence clinics and engaging in scholarship in the areas of domestic violence law, family law, feminist legal theory, and clinical legal theory. As the Director of the UCI Law Domestic Violence Clinic, she supervises law students representing abuse survivors in civil, criminal, and immigration cases.
Corey J. Rood, MD, is the newest Child Abuse Pediatrician with the Department of Pediatrics at UC Irvine, CAST, and Miller Children’s and Women’s Hospital in Long Beach. He is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics with the UC Irvine School of Medicine. As a child abuse pediatrician, his work focuses on the diagnosis, care, and management of potentially abused and neglected children.
Dr. Jodi Quas, Professor of Psychological Science in the Interdisciplinary School of Social Ecology, has begun to evaluate interviewing strategies to increase disclosures in youth victims of sex trafficking. This work involves collaborations with multiple law enforcement agencies and legal professionals, all of whom are providing input to maximize the impact of the work in terms of identifying and protecting victims and prosecuting perpetrators.
The confirmed speakers at the forum represent Waymakers, The Orange County Human Trafficking Task Force, the Riverside County Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force, the San Diego Police Department and many more. In addition, we are honored to have a wealth of knowledge from community leaders active in their chosen fields speaking at the Forum including:
Michelle Heater, Program Director, Victim Assistance Programs, Waymakers
Debbie Martis, Steering Committee, Riverside County Anti-Human Trafficking Taskforce
Dr. Sandra Morgan, Director, Global Center for Women & Justice, Vanguard University
Chief David Nisleit, Chief of Police, City of San Diego
Sergeant Juan Reveles, Anaheim Police Department, Task Force Sergeant, Orange County Human Trafficking Task Force
Dr. Mellissa Withers, Associate Professor of Clinical Preventive Medicine, Department of Preventive Medicine, Keck School of Medicine of USC
Scholars, experts, legislators, and public officials will share research findings, examples from their work, and policy proposals for the way forward. The forum will provide the opportunity to exchange ideas for solutions and increase collaboration and momentum for legislative change. We look forward to the first of many Forums to advocate for our mission to spread awareness and save lives.
